“I’m not shy, make you sigh / Slip and slide up my thighs / Juicy, just like clementines / Sorry if I make you cry / Party time, hop inside / We’re so high, roller coaster ride… I like, I like, I like, I like, I like everything about you.” ‘Claws’ Charli xcx

I am going to miss Kalia. One last iconic party before she goes away. It felt so bittersweet. Audrey, Lilianna, Kalia, and I spent the whole day running around town to get the party together, and Kalia made some of the most wicked hooch I’ve ever had. I had a whole strawberry shortcake-inspired look that was meticulously crafted; however, I should have known that the call of the Slip n’ Slide would be too much to resist. I got soap in my eye twice, and Lilianna had to help me twice get it out. There came a point in the night when my shorts got completely soaked, and I had to wear only my bathing suit. Brady and I wrestled on the slip n’ slide and I won both times (loser.) I braided Cassidy’s hair in the parking lot while the fireworks were going off, and we walked to Donnas when the party ended. Immediately when we arrived, she fell asleep in a booth, and so we turned around and walked right back home.

I have a bruise on my leg and my abs hurt from laughing so much- I think it was from watching how Lexie went down the slip n’ slide. I was able to destroy my first piñata. I felt like Patrick Bateman killing Paul Allen with an axe.

I love the energy I have with Lilianna. She pointed out that we both devolve into immature 12-year-old boys. She is good about pointing out the irony of a situation and making the dirty joke before anyone else can. This type of post-ironic self-satirization is hilarious to me. I like jokes that are so dumb they are funny.

I have a bad habit of drinking and then playing Crush by Ethel Cain and forcing everyone around me to listen to it. It’s not funny, charming, or endearing at all, but it’s a fundamentally human thing that I can’t help but do. Sometimes it is fun to wallow. In these moments, I always think of the scene in The Great Gatsby where a sorrowful woman sings drunkenly on a piano as the dregs of the party trickle out. Florence Welch was brought into the studio to sing live as the woman, and in the behind-the-scenes of the movie I learned that Baz Luhrmann was in the studio with her– directing Florence- egging her to sing sadder- when to pour herself out with the music.  He hid on set in many party scenes to direct the cast and extras while filming, disguising himself as a party-goer to be as inconspicuous as possible.

When I have my Crush moments, I feel like Baz Luhrmann would appreciate it, or the invisible audience watching my every move. I think I would annoy the audience; however, they would ultimately sympathize with my character. I think about The Great Gatsby every day. I like what Jordan says- I love big parties because they are so private.

Another line from The Great Gatsby that reminds me of the Fourth of July is something Daisy says often in the final act of the book: “It’s so hot!”
